EUROPE SIZZLES IN HEAT, EMERGENCY IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

“Gosh,” Orak wiped off the sweat on his forehead. “It was so hot!”

The four Mysticals wanted to visit the United Kingdom (UK), a country in Europe. But when they reached the country, the temperatures were soaring high! The Mysticals had to return home.

“The UK has declared national emergency due to the rising temperature. The country is going through a heatwave,” Felix said. “A heatwave is a period of unusually high temperatures. The rising temperatures are a result of climate change.”

“No wonder the heat was so unbearable!” Verum said as she chugged a glass of water.

“Yes. The temperature hit a new record of 40.3 degrees Celsius (104.5 degrees Fahrenheit). It’s the highest temperature ever recorded in the UK!” Felix exclaimed and added, “Due to the heatwave, fires are blazing across London and other parts of the country.”

“I hope the temperatures fall soon,” said Scorch. “Maybe we can explore another European country?” suggested Scorch.

“I am afraid that’s not possible either,” replied Felix. “It’s not just the UK. Several countries in Europe are also experiencing the heatwave.

Cazaux in France recorded a high temperature of 42.4 degrees Celsius (108.3 degrees Fahrenheit). It is the hottest recorded temperature in 100 years! There are also wildfires blazing in several parts of the country. Many people and villages have been evacuated.

Spain also recorded high temperatures and wildfires. Many people lost their lives due to the heatwave.

Portugal is also going through a heatwave. There are wildfires in several parts of the country. The intense heatwave has caused a drought (shortage of rain or water) in Portugal.

In southern Europe, more than 1,100 people have lost their lives due to the ongoing heatwave.”

“It’s risky to go out in such high temperatures,” said Verum.

“Yes. Authorities have advised people to drink plenty of water and stay inside as much as possible,” Felix said.

“I hope the heatwave passes soon and people feel some relief!” Scorch said.
