Today, the evening took on a golden tinge in MysticLand. Scorch sniffed the air and said, “We’re in for stormy weather tonight, Mysticals! It’s going to be loud and flashy.”
“Okay,” said Orak and Felix, immediately going back to the task at hand. Felix said, “Your next word is lassitude.”
Orak began spelling it out, “L-A-S-S-I-T-U-D-E.”
Felix said, “That’s correct.”
Scorch interjected, “What are you two doing?”
“Haven’t you heard? Our school is holding a spelling bee competition,” said Felix, “And Orak is determined to excel!”
“Good for you, Orak! It’s nice to see you so excited about something,” said Scorch.
Orak replied, “E-X-C-I-T-E-D!”
Verum looked up from her perch next to her crystal ball. She said, “Coincidentally, I have news about a historic spelling bee competition from the United States (US).”
“Yay! It’s time for news,” said Scorch, hopping across the room to Verum.
Verum said, “Zaila Avant-garde, a 14-year-old from New Orleans, US, won the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee on 8th July! This makes her the first African American to win this competition in its 96 years!”
“That is so cool,” said an excited Orak, “Which word did she spell to win the competition? I mean C-O-M-P-E-T-I-T-I-O-N.”
“Avant-garde spelled the word ‘murraya’ which is a tropical tree,” answered Verum, “Can you spell it, Orak?”
“Hmm,” said Orak, “Let me try. Is it M-U-R-A-Y-A?”
“No, unfortunately, it’s not,” said Verum, “It’s spelled M-U-R-R-A-Y-A.”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” said Orak with a scrunched-up face, “Which other words did she spell?”
“She conquered multiple rounds by spelling words like ‘retene’, ‘ancistroid’ and ‘depreter’,” said Verum.
“Wow, I need a dictionary to understand their meanings,” said Scorch, “Could you tell us more about Zaila Avant-garde?”
“Oh, Scorch, you’ll find this interesting,” replied Verum, “Avant-garde is also an extremely talented basketball player. She holds three Guinness World Records in dribbling.”
“Whoa, she sounds so cool!” said Felix, brimming over with admiration, “Is there anything Avant-garde cannot do? I think not!”
