Top news for Kids: WORLD CUP PROTESTS GATHER STEAM

“I am so excited the 2022 football World Cup is about to begin!” Scorch jumped in joy. But after a second, she stopped and said, “But there have been many protests against Qatar.”

“Why?” Orak asked.

“Qatar is a country in the Middle East. It is hosting the 2022 football World Cup. It is the first Arab nation to host the tournament. The World Cup begins on November 20.

But many fans and football players are protesting against the country’s law. They don’t like the way the country’s laws treat some of its citizens and migrant workers,” Scorch informed her friends.

“What do you mean?” Felix said.

“Protesters don’t like the way Qatar treats its migrant workers (people who have traveled from one place to another to find work). Many workers who were building the World Cup stadiums and hotels have been injured. Some have even died. It’s due to lack of health and safety measures,” Scorch said.

Scorch added, “Now, a total of 1.5 million football fans are going to arrive in the country to watch the football matches.  I hope they have a good time”

Scorch said, “Qatar World Cup organizers said that everyone is welcome. It asked the visitors to respect their culture.”
