AND THE OSCAR GOES TO…

“The winners’ list of the 2022 Oscars is inspiring and amazing,” said Scorch, quickly adding, “filled with a few remarkable wins. Since 1929 the Academy Awards, popularly nicknamed the Oscars, have been held every year in Hollywood, California. The award function is often held in February-March.

This year, the 94th Academy Awards ceremony was held on March 27, honoring the best of the movies released between March 1 and December 31, 2021.”

“Indeed! I watched it through my crystal ball,” smiled Verum.

“Scorch, Verum, you guys must keep us informed of such interesting events happening in the human world,” demanded Orak.

“Surely!” Scorch, who loved sports and entertainment equally, said and she started looking around the dorm room. She went to the corner near the entrance to Felix’s garden and grabbed a stool.

The Mystical got the hint, “She is going to be our host!” chuckled Verum as she handed her a cardboard tube lying on her desk to be used as a mic.

“Welcome to the Oscars 2022. I will now mention one after the other the outstanding wins of the year! The first one on my list is how two female directors won the Best Director award for two years straight. This year the award was given to Jane Campion for her drama, The Power of the Dog…”

“Last year, Chloe Zhao had won the award for her film Nomadland. Normally, the awards are male-dominated but this has happened for the first time,” Verum added sheepishly.

“True! Continuing” said Scorch in an animated way, “it was the second time in the history of the Oscars that a deaf actor was awarded. Troy Kotsur won the Oscar for the best supporting actor for his role in Coda,” Scorch paused as Verum raised her hand to add a quick fact.

“Actress Marlee Matlin, who is also aurally challenged, won the best actress for Children of A Lesser God exactly 35 years ago,” Verum blurted out in a second.

“Very good, Verum! Next, we have a ‘character’ that won best supporting actress twice! Sixty years ago, Rita Moreno had clinched the Oscars for best supporting actress for her role as Anita in the original film adaptation of the musical West Side Story. This year, Ariana DeBose won best supporting actress for playing the same role in Steven Spielberg’s new version of the same film.

Then we have the first-ever best film award given to a streaming service! Apple TV+ won the best film award for Coda.

Moving on, it was the first time two veterans received their first Oscars ever. Sir Kenneth Branagh won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for “Belfast”. In his four-decade-long career, Branagh was nominated for Academy Awards across seven different categories during his career, but this was his first win.

The other veteran is actor Will Smith, who also got his first-ever Academy Award for best actor for the film King Richard. Smith made his debut 30 years ago with the film Where the Day Takes You and has been nominated twice for the best actor before.

Lastly, this one is a shocker, Ari Wegner became only the second woman in the history of the Oscars to be nominated for best cinematography for the movie The Power of The Dog. Did you guys know that no female has ever won the award, but Wegner lost out to fellow Australian Greig Fraser, who shot the sci-fi Dune.

And that’s all from me, your host for tonight. See you next year,” Scorch took a graceful bow as Verum, Orak, and Felix clapped for the winners and their super animated friend!
